|A women empowerment story like no other.|
Tihar Jail has always been known its various reformatory programmes for inmates, from college degrees to vocational training. Now, the prison is again in news for a unique fashion show that was held in Janakpuri’s Delhi Haat.
In a unique initiative, Tihar collaborated with pearl academy to open a “Fashion Laboratory” in February this year. The vision was to help women inmates to learn life sustaining skills and will provide them with great opportunities to earn a livelihood in their life-after-prison. The laboratory is said to be a modern facility with equipment of industrial standards, including pattern tables and sewing machines.
The first batch of Tihar Fashion Laboratory was joined by 24 inmates but 6 were released from the prison. 18 inmates graduated on 9th September. The ceremony included a fashion show where the inmates walked the ramp wearing clothes designed by the students of pearl academy and stitched by the inmates themselves.
Sudhir Yadav, DG, Tihar Jail said that, “These initiatives also proved to be therapeutic for them. We can notice changes in their behavior. Those who had grown unhappy could be seen interacting and participating more heartily.”
